Electricity used at a site abroad is worked out with that country's grid factor, not the UK one, as the GHG Protocol asks. Until now we used Ember's open grid estimates for every country outside the UK and US. Where a government publishes its own figure under a licence we have checked, we now use that instead, because it is the one a local customer, lender or regulator is most likely to expect.

The six countries

CanadaEnvironment and Climate Change Canada0.102 CO2e (2024)Official, 2024: 0.102

SingaporeEnergy Market Authority (EMA)0.408 CO2 (2020)Ember, 2025: 0.497

For China and Singapore the 2025 figure still comes from Ember, because Ember's data is more than a year newer than the latest official figure. The country page shows both.

Where you'll see it

The page for each of these countries in our electricity factors by country now shows the official series and its source alongside Ember's, and our page on overseas sites explains which figure applies where. In the app, give a site its country and its electricity is worked out with the right grid. Each emissions line names the publisher and year of the factor it used, and the SECR report and methodology name the sources. Entries saved before 19 October 2026 keep their earlier figure until your organisation's footprint is recalculated, which happens when you change a calculation setting or a site's country.

Grid losses and well-to-tank emissions are not added for sites abroad, as no free source publishes them for every country. Other governments publish figures too, and we check each one's licence before adding it.

How Carbon Recycling helps

If you have sites in more than one country, Carbon Recycling keeps them in one footprint, each with its own grid figure, and still reports your UK sites with the DESNZ factors for SECR. Our post on reporting across several sites covers how to set that up.
