Net zero planner: test your reduction plan on your own figures
Before you spend money on LED lighting, a heat pump or electric vans, see what each would do to your emissions and running costs, worked out from your own carbon data. Then check your target against the Science Based Targets initiative's rules for smaller companies, and add the plan to your Carbon Reduction Plan.
למי זה מיועד
- Businesses of any size with a net zero commitment who need to show how they'll get there.
- Suppliers asked by customers for a science-based target or a credible reduction plan.
- Anyone deciding which energy, fleet or travel measures to do first.
מה זה עושה
- Up to 30 measures, each modelled on the part of your footprint it affects, including measures that swap fuel for electricity, such as heat pumps and electric vehicles.
- Carbon saved a year for each measure, the yearly running-cost saving and simple payback when you add the cost.
- Your scope 1 and 2 path year by year, against SBTi's minimum straight-line cut from your base year.
- An SBTi check: whether you look able to use the SME route, and whether your base year, target year and cut fit its rules.
- One button adds the measures to your Carbon Reduction Plan, with their expected savings.
SBTi's minimum near-term cut for SMEs
Scope 1 and 2 together, absolute, from SBTi's checklist for SMEs: 4.2% for each year from the base year to the target year.
| Base year | Target 2030 | Target 2032 | Target 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 46.2% | 54.6% | 67.2% |
| 2022 | 33.6% | 42% | 54.6% |
| 2024 | 25.2% | 33.6% | 46.2% |
| 2025 | 21% | 29.4% | 42% |
The base year must be a full calendar or financial year no earlier than 2015, the same for scope 1 and 2. The target year must be 5 to 10 years from when you submit, unless you choose 2030, which SBTi recommends. A net zero target means cutting scope 1, 2 and 3 by at least 90% by 2050 at the latest.
מה זה לא
A planning tool built from your data and the published rules, not an energy survey or advice. It doesn't recommend specific products, guarantee savings or submit anything to SBTi. Switching to a renewable electricity tariff lowers market-based scope 2 only, not the location-based figure SBTi's SME limit uses.
שאלות
- Where do the savings come from?
- From you. For each measure you say which part of your footprint it affects, such as electricity, gas heating or company cars, and how much of it you expect it to remove, from a quote, a survey or your own estimate. The planner works out the carbon from the emissions you've recorded for that part of your footprint. We don't make up savings figures for equipment we haven't seen.
- How are the money savings worked out?
- If you have your own figure, put it in. For electricity and gas, if you don't, the planner estimates it from the energy saved at the government's average business price for a site of your size (DESNZ quarterly energy prices, before VAT and Climate Change Levy). Your own tariff will be different, and every estimate is labelled as one.
- What are the Science Based Targets rules for smaller companies?
- The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has a simpler route for small and medium-sized companies. To use it, scope 1 and location-based scope 2 emissions must be under 10,000 tonnes CO2e, the business can't be a financial institution or in oil and gas, can't be required to use SBTi's sector-specific criteria, and can't be part of a group that falls into the corporate route. It must also meet at least three of: under 250 employees, turnover under €50 million, total assets under €25 million, not in a mandatory forest, land and agriculture sector. The near-term target is an absolute cut in scope 1 and 2 of at least 4.2% for each year from the base year to the target year, so 25.2% for 2024 to 2030.
- Does using the planner mean SBTi will approve my target?
- No. The planner checks your target against SBTi's published rules for SMEs and tells you what doesn't fit. SBTi decides eligibility and validates targets itself, from what you submit, and charges every SME a validation fee. We aren't connected to SBTi.
- Does it work with my Carbon Reduction Plan?
- Yes. It reads your base year, target and net zero year from your Carbon Reduction Plan, and one button adds your measures to the plan's planned measures, each with its expected saving.
- What does it need underneath?
- Any paid plan, because it works from your recorded emissions. The planner is £29 + VAT a month, or £290 + VAT a year paid upfront, with a 12-month minimum. On the free trial you can model measures; adding them to your Carbon Reduction Plan needs a paid plan with the planner.
