Six questions about one site. You'll see whether it looks likely to qualify, the size of exemption it would get, and a rough idea of what that could be worth using the government's own estimate. It is an indication, not a decision: the scheme decides from your full application, and the government's own checker tests your products. We don't ask for your name or email.

1. Is the business a company registered at Companies House?
3. Does the site make products on the government's eligible product list?

The list uses 6-digit HS commodity codes, the same codes used for customs. The government's own eligibility checker tests your products.

4. Is the site in Northern Ireland?
6. How much of the site's grid electricity goes into making eligible products?

A rough share is fine here. The application asks you to show it.

The four tests

TestNe anlama geliyor
Companies HouseThe business must be a company registered at Companies House. Sole traders and partnerships that aren't registered can't apply.
SektörAt least one eligible 4-digit SIC 2007 code must be recorded at Companies House. The list has 84 codes: 44 "frontier" industries and 40 "foundational" industries that supply them, such as glass, technical ceramics, cement and lime, steel and other metals, chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals, vehicles and electrical equipment. Some industries you might expect, such as paper, bricks and household pottery, aren't on it, so check your code.
ProductsThe site must make products whose 6-digit HS codes are on the eligible list, in Great Britain. You don't have to import or export them.
ElektrikEach site claimed for must use at least 33 MWh (33,000 kWh) of grid electricity a year, shown as more than 16.5 MWh over six months of bills.

How big is the exemption?

It is worked out for each site, from the share of the site's grid electricity used to make eligible products.

What you need to apply

  • The company's Companies House number and authentication code.
  • The MPAN (meter number) for each site's electricity supply.
  • Electricity bills for the most recent six months in a row, from the last 12 months.
  • Details of the products made at each site, with evidence.
  • Confirmation from your supplier if the site is on a private network.

Applications can't be amended once submitted, and incomplete or inconsistent evidence can lead to rejection, so it pays to have the bills and meter numbers in one place first.

Where Carbon Recycling helps

The bills and meter numbers the scheme asks for are the same records a carbon report is built from. Add each site's electricity bills once and every plan keeps them by site and month, runs the free Climate Change Levy and VAT check on them, and turns them into your SECR figures and Carbon Reduction Plan. We don't apply for the scheme for you, and we aren't connected to the government or your supplier.
