Factor API: official UK and country emission factors for your software

Fetch the official UK government conversion factors, the UK residual mix, grid electricity factors for 126 countries and US power regions, and UK spend multipliers as JSON. Every answer says where the figure came from and how to credit it.

Who it is for

  • Software firms adding carbon figures to accounting, ERP, fleet, travel or property products
  • Consultancies and auditors who want the official factors in their own models and spreadsheets
  • Procurement and supplier platforms that estimate emissions from spend or energy use
  • In-house data and sustainability teams feeding a data warehouse or BI dashboard

What it does

  • Every UK government (DESNZ) conversion factor from 2002 to 2026: search by words, category and scope, or fetch one by its DESNZ ID
  • UK electricity in one call: location-based, transmission and distribution, well-to-tank, and the UK residual fuel mix for market-based Scope 2
  • Grid electricity factors for 126 countries by year, using the country's own official figure where its licence allows (Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore) and Ember's elsewhere
  • US electricity for all 27 eGRID subregions and the national average
  • UK spend-based multipliers (kg CO2e per £) by SIC code, 1997 to 2023
  • Licence and attribution text with every answer, so you can show the right credit wherever the figures appear

How it works

  1. Sign in and open Factor API in the app. Create a key and copy it (it is shown once).
  2. Send it with each request as Authorization: Bearer crf_….
  3. Read data, and show the attribution text wherever the figures appear.
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $FACTOR_API_KEY" \
  "https://carbonrecycling.co.uk/api/v1/uk/factors?year=2026&q=diesel&category=fuels&scope=1"

Keys are kept on your server, not in a web page. The API is read-only (GET), answers in JSON, allows cross-origin requests, and is versioned: anything that would break your code goes in a new version, not into v1.

Endpoint reference

Base address https://carbonrecycling.co.uk/api/v1. GET /api/v1 lists the endpoints and sources without a key. For UK factors, year is the DESNZ set (2002 to 2026, default the latest). For electricity by country and US region, year is your reporting year and the answer is the latest data year up to it.

GETWhat it returns
/uk/yearsThe DESNZ sets we hold, with how many factors each has.
/uk/categories?year=Top-level categories in a year's set (Fuels, Passenger vehicles, Waste disposal...), with counts.
/uk/factors?year=&q=&category=&scope=&limit=&offset=Search one year's factors. q matches every word; category is exact (any case); scope is 1, 2 or 3; limit up to 200 (default 50).
/uk/factors/{id}?year=One factor by its DESNZ ID. IDs stay the same between years, so the same ID gives each year's figure.
/uk/electricity?year=UK grid electricity, T&D and well-to-tank, plus the UK residual fuel mix for market-based Scope 2.
/uk/spend?year=&q=&limit=&offset=Defra spend multipliers by SIC code, kg CO2e per £ excluding VAT.
/uk/spend/{sic}?year=One SIC code's multiplier, with every year.
/electricity/countries?year=Every country's recommended grid factor for a reporting year (defaults to this year).
/electricity/countries/{iso3}?year=One country by ISO 3166 alpha-3 code or name slug: the recommended figure, Ember's series and the official national series.
/electricity/us/regions?year=All eGRID subregions and the US average for a reporting year.
/electricity/us/regions/{code}?year=One eGRID subregion (such as RFCE or CAMX) with every edition we hold.

Licences and attribution

We only serve data whose licence allows it to be passed on in a paid product, and we keep a dated copy of each publisher's terms. Every reply lists the sources behind it with their licence and the credit to show. The figures are as published, without warranty, and none of the publishers endorses Carbon Recycling or your product.

Not included

  • Carbon Intensity API (GB electricity, live and forecast)
  • Xero accounting API (the customer's own ledger)
  • EXIOBASE 3 multi-regional input-output (spend factors for every country)
  • IEA emission factors
  • ecoinvent
  • SEAI conversion and emission factors (Ireland), GHG_elec sheet (electricity 2001 to 2025)
  • DESNZ's overseas electricity factors in its 2021 and earlier sets, which were built from IEA data under IEA's own licence

Their terms rule out reselling or redistributing the data, so these stay out of the API. See our data sources page for the full register.

Questions

Can I try it before paying?
Yes. Start the free 14-day trial, open Factor API in the app and create a key. Trial accounts can make up to 100 calls a month for testing.
What counts as a call?
Each successful request with your key. Requests that return an error, such as an unknown factor ID or a year we do not hold, are not counted. The count is shared by all your organisation's keys and starts again on the 1st of each month (UTC).
What happens if we use all our calls?
Further calls that month get a 429 reply that says when the count starts again. Every reply carries X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining and X-RateLimit-Reset headers so your code can see it coming. You can move from Basic to Pro at any time.
Can we show the figures to our own customers?
Yes. Every source we serve allows commercial reuse. Show the attribution text that comes with each answer wherever the figures appear, and don't suggest that the publishers endorse your product.
Why are some well-known sources missing?
We only serve data whose licence lets us pass it on in a paid product. The live GB grid feed from NESO, Ireland's SEAI factors, EXIOBASE, IEA and ecoinvent all have terms that rule this out, so they are not in the API.
How quickly do new factors appear?
DESNZ publishes a new UK set each June. We add each new set, and new country figures, when they are published; the year parameter keeps older answers stable.
Do I need a Carbon Recycling plan as well?
Yes. Factor API is its own subscription on top of any paid plan, with the same 12-month minimum. It is billed separately from the plan.
