What happened
The Energy Networks Association (ENA), the trade body for Britain's network operators, and BEAMA, the trade body for electrical equipment makers, published the full Electricity Networks Sector Growth Plan on 20 October 2026. It follows an interim report in December 2025. Energy Live News reported it the same day; we checked the figures below against BEAMA's own release and the plan's website.
The release says network operators and their supply chain are set to invest up to £200bn over the next ten years; the plan's website gives £181bn of investment in GB electricity networks by 2035. Akshay Kaul, Director General for Infrastructure at Ofgem, welcomed the plan, saying the focus "must be on turning that ambition into delivery".
Why it matters for your carbon report
The plan is about jobs and factories, but the reason the money is being spent is to connect more clean power. The plan's website says it will enable 46GW of offshore wind and 40GW of solar to be connected by 2035. As more of that reaches the grid, the government's UK electricity factor, which turns your kWh into Scope 2 emissions, keeps falling. Our post on why the UK grid gets cleaner every year shows every year's factor.
To see the effect, take an illustrative business using the same 50,000 kWh of grid electricity every year. With the 2016 government factor of 0.41205 kg CO2e per kWh, that is 20.60 tonnes CO2e. With the 2026 factor of 0.13096, it is 6.55 tonnes, about 68% lower. Nobody switched anything off. (These are the generation figures; transmission and distribution losses are reported separately under Scope 3.)
What to do now
How Carbon Recycling helps
