The tools are for anyone who needs an energy or fuel figure quickly: a business owner checking a bill, a fleet manager setting mileage rates, or a writer who wants an official number with its source. They are free, need no sign-up and are listed on our free tools page.

The eight tools

  • GB electricity generation mix: what Great Britain's electricity is made from right now, the last 24 hours, each region and every month since 2009. Data: NESO's Historic GB Generation Mix (NESO Open Data Licence) and NESO's Carbon Intensity API (CC BY 4.0).
  • Electricity supplier fuel mix: each Northern Ireland supplier's fuel mix and CO2 per kWh by year, the UK average and residual mix, and a calculator for your own supplier's figure. Data: the Utility Regulator and DESNZ (Open Government Licence).
  • UK petrol and diesel prices: every weekly average pump price since 2003, with the cost and carbon of any amount of fuel. Data: DESNZ weekly road fuel prices (Open Government Licence).
  • Business electricity and gas prices: what businesses of each size pay per kWh, every quarter since 2004, with or without the Climate Change Levy. Data: DESNZ Quarterly Energy Prices (Open Government Licence).
  • HMRC advisory fuel rates calculator: the tax-free mileage payment for any quarter since 1 September 2024, and the carbon those miles add. Data: HMRC advisory fuel rates (Open Government Licence).
  • Electric vs petrol car: a year's running cost and CO2e for petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars of the same size. Data: DESNZ factors and pump prices, and HMRC's electric rates (Open Government Licence).
  • Flight emissions calculator: any flight by airports or distance, cabin and travellers, with or without radiative forcing. Data: DESNZ conversion factors (Open Government Licence).
  • Electricity grids ranked: every country's grid from cleanest to most carbon-intensive, by year. Data: Ember (CC BY 4.0), with government figures where one is open to reuse.

The tools use the same factor engine as our reporting app. To show why the grid matters: by NESO's figures, Great Britain's electricity averaged 459 g CO2 per kWh in 2009 and 130 g in 2025.

Embedding a tool on your website

Each embeddable tool has an "Embed this tool on your website" box at the foot of its page. Copy the code, which is an iframe plus a credit link back to the tool, and paste it into your page. "Preview the embedded tool" shows how it will look. Embedding is free; we ask that you keep the credit link.

The embedded version has no site menu, cookie banner or analytics, opens its links in a new tab and ends with a "Free tool by Carbon Recycling" line. Embedding works for 11 tools: the eight above, plus the Report check, the Climate Change Levy check and the electricity CO2e calculator. Those three gained embed code earlier the same day. On a translated tool page, the code embeds that language.

Journalists can find key figures, sources and credit lines on our press data page.

Carbon Recycling nasıl yardımcı olur

The tools answer one question at a time. Carbon Recycling turns all of a business's electricity, gas, fuel and travel into a SECR report or Carbon Reduction Plan, with the right government factor for each year. Read more on why the UK grid gets cleaner every year, why fleet emissions should be counted in litres, not pounds and our free Report check.
