Each check answers one question a small business is likely to have about its bills, its waste or its emissions, using the government's own rules and figures. Here is what each one does and who it is for.
Energy VAT, inside the Climate Change Levy check
The Climate Change Levy check now also asks what VAT rate your electricity and gas bills show. Business energy normally carries 20% VAT. Under HMRC's VAT Notice 701/19 the reduced rate of 5% applies to very small supplies (averaging no more than 33 kWh of electricity or 145 kWh of gas a day), homes and residential accommodation such as care homes, and a charity's non-business use. From 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, qualifying electricity in England, Scotland and Wales is zero rated; Northern Ireland stays at 5%. The check says whether your bills look right and, if you can't reclaim VAT, roughly what an overcharge costs a year. Suppliers can correct VAT errors for up to 4 years. It is mainly useful for charities, care homes and small firms that aren't VAT registered.
British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme
The scheme exempts eligible manufacturers in Great Britain from some policy costs on their electricity. The BICS check asks six questions about one site and tests the four conditions in the GOV.UK guidance: a company registered at Companies House, one of the 84 eligible SIC codes, eligible products made at the site, and at least 33 MWh of grid electricity a year there. It shows the likely exemption band and a rough value on the government's indicative £35 to £40 per MWh. Applications opened on 1 October 2026 and close at 11:59pm on 30 November 2026. The scheme makes the decision; our check links to the government's own checker and application.
Simpler Recycling
Since 31 March 2025 every workplace in England must keep dry recyclables, food waste and general waste apart, with paper and card collected separately unless the collector has assessed in writing that it isn't practicable. Micro-firms with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees have until 31 March 2027. The Simpler Recycling check tells you whether the rules already apply to you, or from when, and flags anything in your collections that doesn't match them.
Industry carbon benchmark
The industry carbon benchmark divides your Scope 1 emissions by your gross value added (roughly staff costs plus operating profit plus depreciation) and sets it beside the ONS figure for your industry, across 110 industry groups. Across all UK industries, ONS puts direct emissions at 140 tCO₂e per £ million of value added in 2024, down from 500 tCO₂e in 1990. It is a rough range check, not a score.
